A dirty soda is a soft drink poured over ice, then “dressed” with cream (dairy or oat) and usually a splash of flavoured syrup or citrus. It looks like a float’s cousin. It tastes like soda you can linger over — colder, softer, a little dessert-adjacent.
It blew up on TikTok. In New Zealand it is mostly a home drink: ice from the freezer, a can from the fridge, cream from the door.

What goes in a dirty soda
| Layer | Typical |
|---|---|
| Base | Any fizzy soft drink you like plain |
| Cold | Lots of ice in a tall glass |
| Cream | Splash of cream, half-and-half, or oat cream |
| Optional | Vanilla / caramel syrup, coconut cream, lime |
That is the whole definition. No blender. No alcohol required.
Why Sidekick works as the base
A lot of “better” cans in NZ use stevia or erythritol. Cream on top of that aftertaste is rough. Sidekick is fruit soda sweetened with New Zealand honey — no cane sugar, no stevia, no erythritol — so the dirty build stays clean.
Summer default: Mango coconut. Everyday favourite: Cherry dirty. Full shortcuts: Dirty soda recipe NZ.
Dirty soda vs a float vs diet soda
- Float — ice cream scoop. Dirty soda uses cream, not a scoop.
- Straight soda — just the can. Dirty soda adds ice + cream.
- Diet / stevia soda — different sweetener job. Fine if you like it; skip it if you do not.
