Real fruit vs “natural flavors” on the label

2 min read Fiona
Real fruit for Sodakick soda

Soft-drink labels love the word natural. Natural flavors can mean a lab-built aroma system that tastes like fruit. Real fruit juice or purée means fruit in the can for taste, colour, and body.

Sidekick leads with real fruit. Cherry, mango, pear, strawberry, watermelon when on offer. Honey and a splash of apple cider vinegar complete the build. No cane sugar. No stevia. No erythritol.

How to read the difference

On the label What it usually means
Fruit juice / purée high in the list Fruit doing flavour work
“Natural flavors” as the hero Flavour system; fruit may be thin or absent
Functional claim first You are in Market A — two markets

Honest sourcing — not a slogan farm

Fruit is by flavour. Mango is North Queensland. Strawberry is Waikato. Honey and apple cider vinegar are New Zealand. We do not claim every fruit is NZ-grown. Stockist version: Made in New Zealand for your fridge.

Why investors and buyers should care

Ingredient honesty is a diligence filter. Brands that overclaim fruit or origin get caught in retail and press. We would rather win on a can people finish than on a vague “natural” stack.
