Honey soda vs stevia soda in New Zealand

2 min read Fiona
Sodakick honey soda — not stevia

Most “better for you” cans in the chiller still lean on stevia. Sidekick does not.

Sidekick is a honey soda from Wānaka: real fruit, New Zealand multifloral honey, a splash of apple cider vinegar, sparkling water. No cane sugar. No stevia. No erythritol.

What stevia soda is trying to do

Stevia cans usually sell a diet or zero-sugar story. That works for many people. It does not work for everyone — including our co-founder Fiona, who tastes stevia as bitter and metallic. Sidekick exists so that shopper still gets a real fruit soda they finish.

If stevia tastes fine to you, keep drinking what you like. If it does not, you need a different sweetener story.

Sidekick in one table

Stevia diet soda Honey soda (Sidekick)
Sweetener Stevia (often) New Zealand honey
Fruit Varies Real fruit juice / purée
Sugar Often ~0 g Present — from honey and fruit; read the can
Job Diet-leaning fizz Fruit soda you finish
Claims Often “zero” / diet No gut, hormone, or medical claims

Not kombucha either

Kombucha is fermented. Sidekick is mixed and carbonated. Different fridge job: Honey soda vs kombucha for NZ cafés.
